According to the 2008 worldwide quality of living survey from U.S.-based Mercer Human Resources Consulting, Santiago ranks third in Latin America for quality of life. As well as low-cost, high-standard housing and respected, but inexpensive international schools, Chile has some of the best medical facilities in the region. It also has a comprehensive and secure banking system, plus excellent commercial and leisure facilities. In addition, Chile has one of Latin America's lowest crime rates. América Economía found that Santiago's homicide rate, at 1.99 per 100,000 inhabitants, was by the far the lowest among a sample of 18 major cities around the region.
