Chile tops the list of Latin American countries in terms of control of corruption, regulatory quality and government effectiveness, ranked among developed countries according to the latest report issued by The World Bank, "Governance Matters 2007"

Our country leads the ranking for Latin American countries in five of the six indicators measured by the international report, closely surpassed by Costa Rica in political stability, a category in which Chile outperforms countries such as Hungry and United States.

The World Bank's study measures the level of citizen participation and freedom, political stability and absence of violence, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption based on data from 33 different institutions.

Chile improved its position in four of the six indicators with a remarkable ranking in terms of regulatory quality and the government's capacity to promote and implement private sector development policies. In this area, our country scored 91.7 (out of a total of 100), outperforming countries such as Norway, Japan, France and Spain.

Something similar happens regarding government effectiveness, where Chile gets 87.7 points, very close to Japan and above the four BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China.)

"More than a dozen developing countries, among them Slovenia, Chile, Estonia, Uruguay, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Costa Rica, received higher scores than industrialized countries -like Greece or Italy- in key governance indicators."
