Chile was selected as the safest nation for businesses in Latin America in 2006, according to the Latin Security Index published by the Latin Business Chronicle, developed by Holder International. The index measures the level of danger in each country based on homicide rates as well as other factors determining the safety of companies and foreign executives.
Chile received the best rating, "despite having higher homicide rates than countries like Costa Rica and Ecuador." The report further elaborates, "Last year, the county had a homicide rate of 11.6 per 100,000 people, a rise over the rate of 10.4 in 2005." The key factor upping Chile's rating, however, was the personal and corporate safety of foreigners conducting business in Chile.
"Chile is even safer than the U.S.," states the report, which goes on to add that, if the U.S. were included in the ranking, it would have received a score below Chile´s.
