Santiago continues to be in third place in South America in Mercer's 2008 Worldwide Quality of Living Survey, carried out to help governments and companies in placing their employees on international assignments. The Chilean capital fell to 88th place in the world ranking (compared to 83rd place last year), due mainly to a drop in the quality of public transportation.

San Juan, Puerto Rico continues to lead the worldwide quality of living ranking in Central and South America in 72nd place (16 cities ahead of Santiago). It is followed by Montevideo (76), Buenos Aires (78), Santiago (88), Santo Domingo (92), Panama (96) and Monterrey (99). Bogota, in turn, stands out as one of the 10 cities with the lowest level of personal safety in the world (207).

The survey classified 215 cities, using New York as a benchmark (with a base index of 100). European cities dominate the world ranking in terms of quality of living. Zurich holds on to first place, followed by Vienna and Geneva (tied for 2nd place), Vancouver (4) and Auckland (5). In other parts of Asia, Kuala Lumpur ranked 75th, followed by Taipei (84), Seoul (86), Bangkok (109) and Jakarta (146). Bangalore (140) is India's highest-rated city, followed by Mumbai (142).
