Corruption in Chile was perceived to be slightly higher this year, causing the country to fall two places to number 22 in Transparency International's global ranking of 180 economies.
Chile continues to lead the region, followed by Uruguay (25) and Costa Rica (46). The country thus holds on to third place in the Americas, surpassed only by the United States and Canada. According to the report, only 1.6% of the population was asked to pay a bribe during 2006. In Peru, 10.7% of those surveyed said they were asked for some sort of bribe, while in Mexico 22.8% reported having been asked by the police to pay bribes. In the case of courts of justice, the figure shoots to 25%.
