EIU: Santiago is among the least expensive Latin American cities

Tokyo is the world´s most expensive city, according to Worldwide Cost of Living 2009, the biannual Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey which compares prices and products in 140 cities around the world. Tokyo is followed by Osaka, Paris, Copenhagen, Oslo, Zurich, Frankfurt, Helsinki, and Geneva.

Santiago (Chile) ranks 97 on the list, after cities such as Caracas (21), Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo (both ranked 83) and Bogota (86).

The least expensive cities are mostly in Asia, including Nepal (128), New Delhi and Bombay (129 and 130, respectively) in India and Karachi (132) in Pakistan. The data quoted in the survey used New York as the baseline index of 100 for comparison purposes.
