Chile improves its position in international rankingsPublished: June 9, 2009
The country has improved its position in five of the seven rankings published in 2009. Commitment to an open economy is one of the factors highlighted.
In the midst of an adverse international context, Chile achieved a significant improvement in the economic rankings. The Economist Intelligence Unit published a list of countries with the best business environments, and Chile rose from 18th to 15th among the 82 economies analysed.
The Economist confirmed that, for the first time since it began to publish the ranking in 1996, the tendency for an improving business climate has been reversed. The report measured the business environment for the period 2009-2013, comparing it with the historic averages from 2004-2008. In the case of half of the countries (44), the business climate got worse.
Chile improved its position in the ranking thanks to its ability to carry out sustained fiscal policies - due to accumulated savings from periods of high commodity prices - and the government's flexible monetary policies.
In Latin America, Chile continues to be an attractive destination for international investment. Interest in our country comes as a result of Chile's commitment to a liberal economy, borne out by the composition of the government, respect for property rights, access to capital and freedom of international trade.
Chile moved from fourth to third position in the economic climate ranking produced by the Brazilian foundation Getulio Vargas and the Institute for Economic Research, at the University of Munich (IFO). Mexico trailed far behind in 35th place, followed by Brazil (39th) and Peru (46th).
The Getulio Vargas Foundation and the IFO affirmed that the outlook for the economic climate in Latin America had improved since January, going from 2.9 to 3.6 points on a general scale.
Among those countries that performed worst in the economic rankings, the United Kingdom fell from 13th to 25th place, and the United States moved from 7th to 12th.
