CORFO organizes 4th International Conference on Renewable EnergyPublished: July 28, 2009
This event has become a key date for business people and entrepreneurs seeking business opportunities in a sector which has grown in importance in Chile, partly due to the enactment of a range of measures concerning the subject of energy.
The IV International Conference on Renewable Energy Investment and CDM will take place on the 7th and 8th of September at the Crowne Plaza hotel, Santiago, Chile. Each year, hundreds of foreign and national investors, consultancy companies, suppliers, national project developers, experts, and government representatives attend the event. This year, the conference expects to host over 1,000 foreign and national participants, including around 200 foreign investors. During the event, approximately 600 business meetings will take place (matchmaking), providing the opportunity to create business partnerships between investors and developers of national projects in the area of non-conventional renewable energy (NCRE) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
At a national level, the event is particularly significant due to the enactment in April 2008 of the Non-Conventional Renewable Energy Development Act. This legislation requires power companies with an installed capacity of over 200MW to derive a percentage of their energy sold each year from NCRE. This figure will begin at 5% in 2010, and gradually increase each year to reach 10% by 2024. This is equivalent to the production of an additional 2,600 MW by that date.
The current global economic crisis and the evidence of man's impact on world climate change have created opportunities for the financing of CDM projects. Aimed at sustainable development, such projects allow developed countries to credit reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and to exchange efficient technologies. Chile is one of the ten countries to receive the most investment in this market since 2005.
